Asphalt Paving FAQs

Question: How much does asphalt cost?

Answer: Many typical in-town driveways will cost between $5,000 and $10,000. Factors that affect driveway pricing include size, difficulty, and scope of work. At United Paving Company our free estimate includes us visiting your driveway to do a standard inspection and give you a specific and detailed estimate based on your needs and wants.

Question: Is asphalt the best choice for my driveway?

Answer: Asphalt pavement is one of the best choices for a driveway in Wisconsin. However not every project is an ideal candidate for asphalt paving, and we will give you an honest recommendation of whether it is a good fit for your project when you contact us.

Question: How does a “free estimate” work?

Answer: You may contact us by phone or through our website for an estimate. An estimator will contact you to set up the estimate. We try to message or call within the first day or two so keep an eye on your spam folder if you use one. We are happy to meet in person or swing by without an appointment depending on your preference. After we visit your driveway, the estimator will be able to give you an idea of when to expect an estimate, sometimes we can even email pricing on the same day.

Question: What about seal coating?

Answer: We do not currently offer seal coating services. There are several reputable companies in the area who perform rubberized crack filling and seal coating. We’d be happy to provide a recommendation, just call or message us.

Question: Will doing an overlay save money?

Answer: It depends. While there are companies that will put down very “thin” overlays, the performance of these is usually very poor and we don’t recommend trying one. However, some higher quality overlay methods can preserve and extend the life of pavements with significant savings compared to complete replacements. Most smaller driveways do not realize enough of a cost savings compared with the shorter expected life of the overlay. We’d be happy to provide a recommendation, just call or message us.

Question: How long will an asphalt project take from beginning to end?

Answer: There are usually two phases to each driveway project. Phase 1 is removal of the existing pavement and preparation of the gravel base layer. Phase 2 is the asphalt paving process. We don’t usually plan these two phases on the same day because we find you will get a higher quality product by not rushing the gravel base preparation or the asphalt paving which is what tends to happen when trying to accomplish both in a day. Instead, we plan for two phases and let you use the driveway in-between. The average time that elapses between removal day and paving is a week. This also allows us to try to pick the best weather day for your driveway. You only want to do this project once and we want to put the quality of your driveway as the priority.

Question: How long does asphalt last?

Answer: Even with icy/snowy winters in Wisconsin we will be removing some asphalt driveways that are 30-50 years old. However, if we had to put a number on it, we would guess the average driveway lifespan may be 20 years. It usually depends on the needs of the owner and when they feel its time to get a new driveway.

Question: What about a warranty?

Answer: We offer a 2-year warranty on asphalt replacements. For repair work like fixing potholes or overlays there is usually no warranty attached.

Question: What if I just need a small repair/potholes filled?

Answer: We offer some repair services using various methods such as infrared heat patching, cut-out patching, and pothole filling. We’d be happy to provide a recommendation, just call or message us.

Question: The asphalt against the garage has settled several inches. Do I need to replace the whole driveway?

Answer: It depends, in some cases there are effective repairs while at other times it may be best to replace the entire driveway. We’d be happy to provide a recommendation, just call or message us.
